Altra was a Firecat bonded to Karal.
Altra took a very active role during the Mage Storms, jumping communications from Solaris, and transporting other objects and sometimes even people from place to place. Altra specifically states that he and the Companion Florian are mages,[1][2] and they first serve as such helping An'desha to create part of the "breakwater" at the Iftel border.
Altra first gave the impression that he required neither food nor drink, but was eventually discovered. He mourned deeply when he was unable to save a beloved friend from assassination. After the Mage Storms, he continued to accompany Karal, and provided him with sight.
Altra has the typical intense blue eyes and appearance of a firecat, including markings of the ears, mask, legs and tail. When he gave his name, Karal thought, "Altra? But wasn’t that the name of the Son of the Sun who-" but fell asleep.[3]
