Arven is one of the children Herald-Mage Vanyel fathered as a favor to dear friends who couldn't conceive a child on their own. In this case, the couple were two women who had retired from the Guard, where they had served under Lissa Ashkevron, Vanyel's sister.
Vanyel, who had no particular desire for fatherhood, saw no reason to involve himself when the child had loving parents. As a consequence, when Arven proved not to have inherited Vanyel's Mage-Gift, Vanyel didn't stay in regular contact.
Arven had three half-siblings through Vanyel: twins Brightstar and Featherfire, and Jisa.
Chronology[]
Arven's date of birth is not specified. In 803 AF, when Vanyel is concerned for his offspring's vulnerability before the mage battle in Lineas Castle, he says he has three children, mentioning the twins and Jisa.[1] At that time, the twins were nine years old[2] and Jisa was six.[3] In 812 AF, when Vanyel is talking to Stefen about his children, he also mentions Arven.[4] So evidently she was born sometime between 803 AF and 812 AF.
