Caelen is the Dean of the newly formed Heralds' Collegium; he had been managing the Herald-Trainees before that, and was a key part of the change.[1] He is kind and intelligent; underneath his unworldly appearance he is actually very shrewd and politically savvy.[2] Caelen is a member of Herald Nikolas' information network and assists him by providing information about Trainees or “smoothing things over” with the Heraldic Circle.

Caelen looks out for Mags by offering him advice and opportunities to socialize with the other Trainees. He recommends Mags join a Kirball team, something he wouldn't normally do for a first-year Trainee.

Caelen is described as a "blocklike fellow."[3]

History[]

As a Herald-Trainee, Caelen was a jokester and got into his share of scrapes. As a Herald, he rode Circuit on the Borders, through small villages that had only recently joined Valdemar and were very anxious to stay under Valdemar's protection. They wanted to make sure not to do anything wrong. It required a lot of "personal managing" and he became kind of a central authority which hadn't existed. “Ten years of that made it clear to Herald Parthen that I was capable of handling his position, so he put in my name as the sole candidate and when he died, I suddenly found myself managing the Heraldic Trainees, and I managed us right into the new building and the methodical training system.”[1]
