The Gift of Fetching allows the user to move objects without physically touching them. The Gifted person must be able to see the object, either in person or by using FarSight to Fetch an object from a long distance away. If they do not also have Farsight, they may partner with someone who does. Herald Dirk (Fetching) and Herald Kris (FarSight) had great success. The energy required for Fetching is directly proportional to the object's size and the distance.
Fetching can be used for a variety of reasons, from sending an important written message home to the Monarch from circuit, retrieving an important object, or just stealing the ball during a game of Kirball.
It is generally held to be impossible to Fetch something living without killing it, such as turning it inside out. However, someone with an especially strong Fetching Gift can use it to move living beings over very short distances. Herald Dirk taught Herald Christa that it was safest to do this when touching the living being to transport it elsewhere. Centuries earlier, Delia was able to move a foal a very small distance when it was stuck in the womb during birth.[1] Dirk later discovered from library research that it was possible for a person to Fetch themselves over short distances, but neglected to tell Christa.[2]
Later, with the support of Elspeth and all of the Companions, Dirk was able to Fetch Talia from a very long distance away.[2]
When racing to get Stefen to safety before Vanyel's final battle, Yfandes told him that she was doing "something like Fetching, only with us" to cover ground more quickly.[3]
Another gift, FireStarting, is said to be similar to Fetching as it involves moving an object in a minuscule way to create a vibration that starts a fire.

- ↑ Magic's Price. Rather than simply accepting this as "not Fetching," fans have interpreted this in other ways. Perhaps she did not want Stefen to think that Fetching a living object was possible for everyone, in every circumstance. Companion magic is sometimes not subject to ordinary limitations. Either way, the ability might be extrapolated to explain how Rolan got from the Grove to the bereaved Talamir so quickly in Exile's Honor.
