Chronology[]
- 1404 AF Before midwinter In a terrible snowstorm, a young Guardsman admits a Northern tribes woman and her four children into the Briar's Rock palisade. The inn owners refuse to shelter them, and the Guard sergeant gets help and shoves them back out into the storm. In the months that follow, a bear starts killing villagers ... always people who helped push the family out.
- 1405 AF Spring Khaari departs Sweetbark in the High Hills. In two days she approaches Briar's Rock, which is at the start of the snowline for Valdemar's mountain border with the Northern territories. ("Snow blanketed the road" ... it seemed as though "spring vanished.") Khaari solves the mystery.
