Gwena is a Grove-Born Companion who Chose Princess Elspeth. Before it happened, Elspeth was becoming very concerned, as she was past the expected age.
Elspeth felt called to the Sacred Grove one night during a big storm and actually watched as Gwena materialized. Talia joined her there, but then Rolan erased their memories of the event.[1] In fact, all of the Heralds were hypnotized to remember Gwena as a shy Companion from the herd who had not yet chosen.
Gwena was destined to be the Companion to the first Herald-Mage since Vanyel. It was crucial to keep this fact, as well as her Gifts, a secret until Elspeth was prepared to know the truth.
Gwena attempted to guide Elspeth to her "great destiny," in accordance with a Plan designed by the Companions. Gwena's self-satisfied humming made Elspeth aware that she was being herded.[2] Elspeth got irritated and decided to forge her own path instead.
Elspeth later found out that Gwena was able to use Mindspeech over long distances, just like Rolan, and was reporting to him daily.[3] She also found out that Gwena could "feed" her with additional mage energy, on top of what Elspeth could already draw from the land.
Gwena later killed King Ancar by trampling him to a pulp while cursing him for all the pain he had caused.[4]
