Chronology[]

The stories "Vixen" and "A Midnight Clear" take place in Kettleford around a year apart. Regarding herself and her horse Brownie, she said, "the two of them had been doing this routine for four years now, and gods willing, Brownie was good for another twenty at least."[1]

Although the story "Vexed Vixen" was the second published story, it occurs years later, after Vanyel teaches her to look through the eyes of animals. (Such an ability would have been useful in "A Midnight Clear" but was not mentioned nor used.) In "Vexed Vixen," she "had been riding this part of the world for five years now, and she had been riding Circuits in near-wilderness for most of her life as an active Healer." She rides this newer circuit alone, with no mention of a Herald.[2]

On an additional note, a Herald-Mage Trainee didn't typically ride circuit, but was sometimes assigned to a Border where magic was needed, such as White Foal Pass or, as in this case, around the edges of the Pelagirs.[3]
