Jakyr is a Herald who assists Dallen with saving his Chosen Mags from life as a child miner. Once Mags is fit to travel, Jakyr escorts him to Haven. Due to events in Jakyr’s past and his dangerous job as a negotiator, he is very unwilling to form new relationships with others and is relieved when Mags demonstrates he doesn’t see Jakyr as a father figure or mentor.[1] Jakyr is an agent of King’s Own Nikolas.[2]
Jakyr's parents own an inn known for its food, and Jakyr learnt how to cook as he didn't want to clean. He pretends to be a terrible cook so his traveling companions don't complain about eating at inns. Jakyr comes from a very large family as his parents are believers of a religion where "you had to have as many younglings for the Glory of God as you could manage".[3]
Jakyr had a romantic relationship with Master Bard Lita but broke it off, resulting in an antagonistic relationship between the two. Jakyr avoids spending time in Haven to avoid meeting with Lita. Nikolas speculates that the missions he sent Jakyr on caused the break up but Mags advises that it was mostly Jakyr’s personal fears towards commitment that caused the rift.[2]
Jakyr serves as Mags’ mentor during the latter’s circuit in the areas surrounding The Bastion. Jakyr is annoyed when Lita joins the group. When the Sleepgivers find them and threaten to start killing villagers unless Mags gives himself up, Jakyr and Jermayan seek help but have to turn back when Jakyr is grievously injured. Mags, Dallen and Bear are able to combine their strengths and heal Jakyr.
While Mags is debating to give himself up to the Sleepgivers, Jakyr confesses why he broke up with Lita and advises Mags to leave without saying goodbye to Amily. Jakyr had barely survived a Karsite ambush and realized that he didn't want Lita to go through the grief of burying him or risk having her killed as she travelled with him. Jakyr then purposely drove her away from him. He later confesses the truth to Lita and they reconcile.[4] It is not state whether the pair resume their romantic relationship but are shown to be on friendlier terms in The Herald Spy series.
