Valdemar Wiki

The Kaled'a'in language was used in the Mage Wars era by the Kaled'a'in people and Urtho's gryphons, before they became separated into the Tayledras, the Shin'a'in, the lost Clan K'Leshya, and the lost Third Army. This page includes translations and (when possible) references. Some of these terms may have cognates in "modern" Shin'a'in language and Tayledras language; when those are available, please add them here as well.

Modern Valdemar first encounters the Kaled'a'in language as spoken by the gryphons Treyvan and Hydona. When the gryphons of Iftel appear, they discover that the language has drifted. In Iftel, the Kaled'a'in language is referred to as "Old Gryphon."

  • Dhorisha Shin'a: the Plains of Sacrifice[1] ("shin'a" meaning plains), now known as the Dhorisha Plains
  • Kechara: "beloved" or "darling," Also the name of Urtho's gryphon Kechara.[2]
    • Shin'a'in variant: ke'a'char - used by Kerowyn[3]
    • Tayledras variant: ke'chara - used by Savil[4]
  • Kestra'chern: A profession that blends physical, psychological, and spiritual healing[2]
  • Mornelithe: "hatred that returns."[6]
  • Perchi: prostitute. not to be confused with kestra'chern, who treat the whole person[2]
  • Shin'a'in: the People of the Plains[1] ("shin'a", in common with Dhorisha Shin'a, evidently means plains)
  • Taylesederas: Brothers of the Hawks, the origin of the word Tayledras. The Shin'a'in now call them Tale'edras.[1]
  • Taylesederin: original Hawk Clan,[1] now known as Clan Tale'sedrin (Children of the Hawk)
  • Trondi'irn: Professional caregiver for non-humans (gryphons, kyree, etc) who provides services that non-humans cannot do for themselves[2]

Gryphon-pronounced words[]

  • Asshkeyana (likely ashkeyana) - means beloved, same as Tayledras ashke[7]
  • Kena Lessshya'nay (likely Kena Leshya'nay) - "clan bound by spirit." This is Kaled'a'in language for Clan k'Leshya, the Spirit Clan, regarded for over two thousand years as the "Lost Clan."[7]
  • Kena Trrrevasho[7] - Clan k'Treva
  • Kena Sheynarsa[7] - Clan k'Sheyna
  • Kla'hessshey'messserin (likely Kla'heshey'messerin) - Firesong accurately translates this as "pledged clan." Darkwind more vaguely translated it as "family made of those who not only were not related by blood — but who might not even be of the same species." Clan k'Leshya was structured this way. A person could not join, but could only be chosen, and then agreed to by three more members.[7]

Implicit use[]

  • Sketi - used as an exclamation in the same context as modern Shin'a'in "sheka" which means horse droppings.[5] Tayledras sometimes exclaim shaeka[8] and sometimes "shethka", all presumably with the same meaning or intention.[9]

Splintered[]

When reviewing the weapons found in the ruins of Urtho's Tower, Firesong says, "We have three words here that all mean ‘explosive'!" ... "Your version of Kaled’a’in has two of them, Treyvan, ko’chekarna and chekarna, and from the destruction instructions I think we’ve got a third, ri’chekarna!"[10]
