Prince Karathanelan Jadrevalyn was the second son of King Megrarthon of Rethwellan. The legendary Tarma met him as an adolescent and refused to train him because of his nasty attitude. He was a spoiled and vicious young man, often taunting his younger brother Darenthallis into losing his temper. King Megrarthon sent Daren to Tarma to escape, as his reactions were damaging his reputation.[1] Karathanelan went to Valdemar, where he changed his nickname from 'Thanel' to 'Karath.'[2]

Relationship with Selenay[]

In Valdemar, Prince Karathanelan decided if he couldn't be King of Rethwellan, he would be King of Valdemar. Lord Orthallen, equipped with secrets Selenay had confided, hired a womanizer, actor Norris Lettyn, to teach Karathanelan how to seduce her. Only weeks after they met, they were engaged, and married within a month.[3]

Karathanelan grew impatient and angry with Selenay because he didn't understand why she wouldn't make him King instead of Consort. After she kept insisting that he must be Chosen, Karathanelan tried to force a Companion to Chose him. He "captured" Selenay's Companion Caryo, and she kicked him in the chest.[3]

He fought with Selenay and began cavorting with prostitutes in town, until Orthallen's representative reined him in. His reconciliation with her was facilitated by news of the death of his father, King Megrarthon - a loss she could understand.[4] The news chilled Herald-Weaponsmaster Alberich, who realized that when the new King of Rethwellan shut Karath out of their father's funeral, he had no other place to go.

Selenay was already pregnant with Elspeth, which presented a new opportunity: the potential for a Regency. After Elspeth was born, Karathanelan decided to kidnap Selenay and force her to abdicate in Elspeth's favor, making him her regent. However, his attack was thwarted by Alberich's ForeSight vision of the attack. He was killed when Alberich rode to the rescue with a bunch of trainees. Selenay officially told King Faramentha that Karathanelan died in a hunting accident. No one really mourned his death.[3]

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 By the Sword
  2. Under the Vale and Other Tales of Valdemar, "In an Instant"
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 Exile's Valor
  4. In Exile's Valor, he reconciled with Selenay claiming shock at the loss of his father. Likewise, in Arrows of the Queen, chapter 8, his father died while Thanel was in Valdemar, putting his brother Faramentha on the throne. But in By the Sword, Karathanelan's treachery was said to have caused his father Megrarthon's death. That story has been superseded by Exile's Valor.
