"Patterns" is a story in the Weaver Deira Miniseries by Diana L. Paxson.
Overview[]
Weaver Deira now lives in Haven where her daughter is training at the Collegium. Deira befriends new refugees from the Tedrel Wars and learns of their hill-folk protective spell pattern woven into clothes. Indications of Karsite plots in Haven cause fear, but Deira realizes the pattern can be expanded to protect something bigger.

The story takes place in the third year of the Tedrel Wars, in King Sendar's reign. It is summer, and "the last two summers had brought incursions by the Tedrel mercenary horde." This occurs two years after the events described in "Moving On", which occurred in the first year of the Tedrel Wars: "two years ago, her daughter Selaine’s thirst for knowledge had proved stronger than her love for the village." The Tedrel Wars are still going on: "new tales of Karsite agents and Tedrel atrocities" and "the tolling bell that announced the loss of another Herald in the Tedrel Wars."
