Pol is a mercenary, a member of Warrik's Wolves, who fought for Urtho during the Mage Wars. Along with his friends Harl and Kerd, he was separated from the rest of the company during the mad scramble to evacuate Urtho's Tower before the Cataclysm. He was the most talkative of the three, and the one to take charge when needed.
Pol was never comfortable being a man, having always felt that he was inhabiting the wrong body. When fighting a Changebeast required higher level magic than Need's bearer was capable of, Need demanded to be passed on to the fighter Pol, despite his physical gender. Following the fight, Need offered Pol the chance to become physically female, which Pol gladly accepted. Need drained the Changecircle that had produced the monster, using the magical energy to change Pol's body. Doing so in the time just after the Cataclysm, with magic so badly disrupted, was harder than it would have been before, and the effort was what put Need to sleep for centuries.
Pol took up Need, becoming the sword's new bearer, and struck out on her own, leaving behind her friends, who had become uncomfortable in her presence.
