Ratha is a stallion, and Companion to Herald Eldan. He Chose Eldan in the middle of a vegetable patch, having come up behind him while he was weeding it. He has long referred to Eldan as a "hairless ape," having seen an animal trainer at a fair with a monkey that had white streaks in its fur, similar to the streaks in Eldan's hair.
Ratha has always liked Kerowyn, the woman Eldan loves, and believed she would be Chosen if she could ever come to understand how Heralds could sacrifice themselves for people they had never seen. This was a lesson she finally learned after becoming Captain of the Skybolts. Ratha was eventually proven right when she was Chosen shortly after arriving in Valdemar.
