Valdemar Wiki

Please note: This timeline is based on information originally compiled by MerlynPrime. Many of the dates are assigned or estimated rather than being directly from the books: such dates are footnoted as "Hypothetical date."[1] Other dates may be based on such dates, and are marked as such.[2] The notes marked ♘ are from MerlynPrime, others marked ☼ are from pokemama1.

Footnotes are used for the source of the event. If actual timeline information is available, it is explained below the entry and cited there as well.

This article plugs into the Timeline. The letters "AF" mean After the Founding of Valdemar.

The Timeline on Google Docs for this era has some inaccuracies and missed citations. Although some of it was corrected in early 2025, manpower is unavailable to maintain both. It has been continuously updated here since July 2022.

Works

During the reign of Randale the events of the following works occur:

 Timeline

798 AF

Queen Elspeth the Peacemaker dies at the age of seventy-six.
Note: "Elspeth was seventy-six when she was Called"

Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter Two

Reign of Randale, King of Valdemar, begins

Date source: "OFFICIAL TIMELINE FOR THE HERALDS OF VALDEMAR SERIES" in the front of the books

The peace Queen Elspeth wrought "falls to pieces."[3]

Randale's Karse Border War begins.[1]
Hypothesis: ☼ Based on Elspeth's peace ending this year.

Herald-Mages Mardic and Donni are two of the first casualties at the Karse Border. When one of Karse's three hired Adept Mages tried to incinerate a town, Mardic and Donni called the flames to themselves.[4]

(Vanyel later earns the name "Shadowstalker" as he hunts down the three Adepts one by one.)[4]

799 AF

800 AF

Sovvan
Vanyel starts an affair with a guard while at the Karse Border. It lasts two or three months.
Note: Vanyel is 25 years old

Date source: Sword of Ice and Other Tales of Valdemar: "Chance" by Mark Shepherd

Note: Age/date confirmed. When Vanyel is 28 years old in 803 AF, he says the affair was "three years ago."

Date source: Magic's Promise: Chapter One

The Guardsman gifts him with a very large Rose quartz crystal from his family's mine.[5]

801 AF

802 AF

Sovvan Night
Vanyel stands duty for Tantras to stay busy and avoid the celebrations.
Note: One year before Vanyel goes on vacation to Forst Reach

Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter One

Vanyel's new assignment at the Karse border is to take the place of five mages who have been injured.[6]

One of Karse's hired mages sends a flock of demons against some Hardorn civilians. Vanyel kills the mage, who had killed Mardic and Donni.[3]
Note: "I got the bastard that got Mardic and Donni … that particular necromancer had a flock of pet demons and I turned them back on Karse when I killed him."

Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter One

When Vanyel turns demons back to Karse,[3] he gets nicknamed "Demonsbane" and becomes a legendary hero in Hardorn.[7]

When the demons return to Karse and attack,[3] Karse's sentiments against mages and the Gifted intensify.
Note: This will culminate ten years from now in 812 AF with the rise of The Prophet in Karse.[2]

Date source: Magic's Price, Chapter Six

Gifted twins Milla and Orun are Chosen on their tenth birthday. Their Foresight has shown them two possible futures: service to Valdemar, or Darkness. The Darkness is systematically killing everyone with Mage-Gift potential. This explains why there are fewer mages being found and chosen. They rush towards Haven to notify the Heraldic Circle.[8]
Hypothesis: ☼ Date estimated. The story occurs when songs about Vanyel on the Karse border have spread.

Event information: No True Way: "Written in the Wind" by Jennifer Brozek

Note: The pogrom is so successful that by 810 AF, there are no new Mage-Gifted trainees.

Date source: Magic's Price, Chapter Sixteen

Five Days Later
The group has been attacked by monsters and picked off one by one until only Milla remains. Injured, she trudges towards Haven on foot until she passes out. A tinker wakes her and treats her wounds. Her relief is short-lived; she realizes he is the Darkness (Leareth), and he kills her.[8]
Date source: No True Way: "Written in the Wind" by Jennifer Brozek

Withen Ashkevron begins adding two wings to Forst Reach
Note: Ten years before Vanyel's final visit in 812 AF

Date source: Magic's Price, Chapter Seven

803 AF

For the last five years, Valdemar has been in a great deal of conflict.[6]
Note: "We've all endured too much the last five years to be able to afford to do things without thinking."

Hypothesis: ☼ Based on Elspeth the Peacemaker dying five years ago in 798 AF.

Vanyel has spent "most of the last four or five years in combat zones."[3] He has been living out of his packs for the past year.[3]

Autumn. Some time after Vanyel's birthday but before Sovvan
Vanyel returns to Haven after a year on the Karse border doing the work of four or five mages. He gives Savil a large rose quartz crystal (possibly the one he received three years ago from the border guard), as it is her ideal mage focus stone.[6]

Vanyel Ashkevron is twenty-eight (28) years old.
Note: "Twenty-eight years old, and he still makes me feel fifteen"

Hypothesis: ☼ It is past Vanyel's birthday, which is over a month before Sovvan: born 775 + 28 makes 803

Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter One

Jisa is six years old.
Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter Two

King Randale has been ill for eight months, and his lifebonded, Monarch's Own Herald-Healer Shavri, can't cure it.
Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter Two

Randale and Shavri are twenty-four years old.
Note: "they're both so young, not even twenty-five"

Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter Two

Jisa's Mindspeaking Gift reveals itself to Vanyel, and he shows her how to shield.
Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter Two

Vanyel goes to Forst Reach for his "vacation." He discovers that his nephew Medren, illegitimate son of Mekeal Ashkevron and Melenna, has Bardic talent[9]
Note: ☼ Medren is "about twelve" - likely eleven and a half years old. Melenna was already pregnant the Fall day in 791 AF when Vanyel turned 16, so Medren was presumably born the subsequent Spring, in 792 AF.

Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter Four

Note: Confirmation: Medren is "nearly twenty" just before Spring of 812 AF[10]

Vanyel has been a Herald for eleven years
    Note: Since 792 AF

Date source: Magic's Promise, Chapter Five

Vanyel suffers from his father's judgement of his sexuality[11] and is importuned by Melenna seeking sex.[12]

When the ruling family of Lineas is massacred, Vanyel rescues the sole survivor and heir, Tashir, who is being blamed.

Vanyel and Yfandes respond to a desperate call from a Companion over the border in Lineas. The entire ruling family has been massacred in the Palace, leaving only one boy, Tashir Remoerdis, alive. Everyone blames him, and an enraged Herald, Lores, tries to stop the Companion from Choosing the boy.[13]

Vanyel Gates the traumatized boy back to Forst Reach. When Treesa tries to mother him, his Fetching Gift whirls furniture around the room. He seems to trust the Armsmaster (Jervis), so Vanyel puts Tashir in his care. Vanyel and Jervis reconcile. Vanyel chides Medren for manipulating him with his Bardic Gift.[14]

Vanyel and Yfandes return to Lineas undercover to try to find out what happened.[15] He finds more questions than answers, and nothing that will exonerate Tashir.[16]

Sovvan night
Vanyel says it's been twelve years since Tylendel died
Note: Tylendel died in 791 AF

Date source: Magic's Promise: Chapter Eleven

Vanyel brings Tashir, Jervis, and Savil back to Lineas to inspect the palace. Savil and Tashir discover a treaty specifying that the ruling family of Baires, the Mavelans, gets Lineas if its' ruling family dies.[17] Vanyel discovers a Heartstone under the palace, left by the Tayledras to heal a fault-line that could cause an earthquake. The Lineas ruling family was selected to protect it because they do not have magic. Savil also finds the cursed object that caused the massacre. Suddenly they are magically attacked by Vedric Mavelan.[4]

Vedric's spell swarm will attack anyone related to the target who has Mage-Gift. Vanyel has to tell Savil that Jisa is his daughter so someone can shield her. Everyone is protected, so Vedric's spell fails. Disappointingly, the backlash does not affect Vedric; he is being supported by the entire Mavelan family.[18]

Vanyel channels the power of the heartstone into Vedric, killing him and all of the Mavelans. When Vanyel gates to Forst Reach, Father Leren stabs him. On the verge of dying, Vanyel meets the "Shadow Lover" incarnation of death, who offers him the choice to live or die, but tells him the consequences. Sobbing, Vanyel chooses to live on to protect Valdemar.[18]

Young Tashir is now the legitimate ruler of both Lineas and Baires. Vanyel arranges the Lineas-Baires Annexation with Tashir, who styles himself Lord-Baron of the March of Lineas-Baires.[18]

804 AF

Stefen, barely ten years old, arrives at Bardic Collegium in the care of Bard Lynnell
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Two

Treven begins acting as his father's right-hand man in his parent's Border-barony. He is nine (9) years old
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter One

805 AF

806 AF

807 AF

Stefen is thirteen years old and now fully aware that he is shaych.
Note: "Once Stef had reached the age of thirteen his preferences were well established"

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Two

808 AF

809 AF

Jisa confronts Vanyel Ashkevron about her parentage and is happy to find out that Vanyel sired her.
Note: Jisa is twelve years old.

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter One

Bandits blackmail a Healer living north of Valdemar in the Barbarian lands. Old Man Brodie has the Healing Gift, but using it causes pain, so now he only treats animals. The bandits threaten him, and force him to regularly treat their combat injuries.
Note: "Three years ago" from treating Vanyel in 812 AF

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Seventeen

810 AF

Treven, distant cousin to Tantras, becomes next in line to assume the throne of Valdemar when he is Chosen by Companion Eren.
Note: In 812 AF, he was "Chosen two years ago"

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter One

No more trainees with Mage-Gift are Chosen
Note: In 812 AF, Vanyel says "no one has had any trainees with Mage-Gift for the past two years"

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Sixteen

811 AF

Herald Joshel becomes the Seneschal of Valdemar.
Note: "Less than a year in the office"

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter One

Note: Herald Tantras is identified as Seneschal's Herald in Chapter One of Magic's Price, in 812 AF, with Joshe as the nervous Seneschal. Vanyel says about Joshe, "Less than a year in the office, and trying to do the work of twenty. And wishing with all his soul he was back as somebody's assistant. And unfortunately, Tran knows less about the position than he does." Yfandes adds, :He's not comfortable as Seneschal.:

Medren begins his Journeyman trial in the north.[10]

812 AF

After only three months on his Journeyman Trial, Medren returns to Haven.[10]

Stefen graduates to Journeyman status and begins training.
Note: Later in the Spring he says, "I had only just made Journeyman" and that he is "an eighteen-year-old barely three months a Journeyman."[19]

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Five

Spring is well on the way
Herald-Trainee Treven is being trained to be King. Treven is seventeen and distant cousin to Herald Tantras.[20]

Jisa is fifteen (15) years old.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter One

Jisa is an Empath. She is not a Herald but is a Healer-in-training. Vanyel and his aunt Savil are instructing her as a Herald because they know that Jisa will one day be Chosen by Companion Taver to be King's Own. But since Taver is Companion to King's Own Shavri, he won't Choose again until Shavri is dead.[20]

Herald-Mage Vanyel Ashkevron is 37 years old.[2][20]
Note: It has been established that he is twenty-two years older than Jisa, because he was twenty-eight when she was six years old.

Medren, nephew of Vanyel Ashkevron, is one master-work away from being a Full Bard. He is nearly twenty years old.
Note: "he must be nearly twenty!"

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Two

Hypothesis: ☼ Medren is 19 and will turn 20 during this very Spring. He is guesstimated to have been born in Spring of 792 AF. His mother Melenna's pregnancy was mentioned to Vanyel on his 16th birthday in the Fall of 791 AF

Date source: Magic's Pawn: Chapter Seven

Bardic-trainee Stefen is eighteen years old and roommate to Medren. He has all three Bardic Gifts and so he is spending his journeyman period at the Collegium.
Note: "Only eighteen, and he's about to make Full Bard."

Note: "we kept him here for his Journeyman period instead of sending him out."

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Two

Medren tells Vanyel of Stefen's Wild Talent to sing away pain and suggests he try to relieve King Randale's pain. Yfandes confirms that in addition to Stefen's strong Bardic Gift, he has a secondary Gift that is nearly as powerful. ":It's something like Mindhealing, but very specific.:"[10]

Herald-Mage Savil Ashkevron is estimated to be seventy-nine years old
    Note: "just shy of eighty"

Note: Her dates on this timeline are based on this estimate

Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Four

Herald-Mage Kilchas is estimated to be fifty-nine years old.[2]
Note: Herald-Mage Kilchas looks older but is "twenty years younger" than Savil.[21]

Herald-Mages Vanyel Ashkevron, Savil Ashkevron, Lissandra, and Kilchas create the semi-Heartstone at Haven from a quiescent mage node under the palace. They use it to power the existing Web that connects all Heralds to each other, and direct the Web-Spell to focus on the health and safety of all Valdemar, just as the Guardians had been doing. Vanyel recruits the vrondi to watch for mage activity in Valdemar.[21]

Unbeknownst to the Heralds, the quiescent node under Haven is likely the former Heartstone of k'Vesla Vale. The Tayledras left the area when Valdemar and Haven were founded.[22]

The Bardic Circle promotes Stefen to full Bard because his pain-blocking ability helps King Randale. At eighteen, he is the youngest Master Bard in Valdemaran history. He was only a Journeyman for three months.[19]

Karse declares magic anathema due to Vanyel's "Demonsbane" incident ten years ago, and begins the ritual burning or hanging all those with Mage-Gift and mind-Gifts.[23]

In Karse, the man known only as The Prophet, is "maybe twenty or so" years old.[23]

Herald Joshel is Seneschal's Herald, with Arved as Seneschal.
Note: ♘☼ Evidently Herald Tantras left the position and Joshe transferred from Seneschal to Seneschal's Herald.[23]

Treven and Jisa announce they have married. Treven is seventeen (17) and Jisa is fifteen (15).[23]

Late Summer
Vanyel Ashkevron gets a note from home stating that Melenna and Jervis have gotten married.[24]

Vanyel Ashkevron, Savil Ashkevron, and Stefen journey to Forst Reach to visit.[24]

Withen, Vanyel's father, expresses resentment that when they requested a Herald-Mage for a problem, they were sent "only" a Herald.[25]

Mekeal Ashkevron suggests that Forst Reach can help Valdemar train green recruits before they are put on the Karse border. Vanyel invents a system of tax breaks to encourage people to enlist.[25]

Withen has assigned Stefen to Vanyel's room. They sleep together for the first time. Vanyel realizes he and Stefen are lifebonded, and in his dreams Tylendel encourages him.[25]

Vanyel rides out to mindspeak with Joshel, and is queried by the vrondi. He is attacked by a crazy mage and brings him back to Father Tyler at Forst Reach[26]

The mage was faking; he escapes, and strikes Vanyel with a leech-blade intended for his mother, Treesa Ashkevron.[27]

Around twenty years have passed since Vanyel first became sensitized to Gating.
Note: "It's been twenty years, and his channels are still sensitive to Gate-energy"

Date source: Magic's Price, Chapter Eleven

Note: It has been twenty-one years, because the accident happened in the Fall of 791 AF.

Savil Ashkevron Gates to k'Treva Vale and, with the support of Vanyel's biological son Brightstar, convinces Starwind and Moondance to help.[28]

Moondance and Starwind remove and destroy the leech-blade, then combine forces with Savil and Stefen to lead Vanyel back from unconsciousness. They privately inform Savil that Stefen is the reincarnation of Tylendel.[28]

Moondance tells Vanyel's parents about Tallo losing his family forever. Vanyel insists that his parents come to Haven for their safety. Vanyel and his father reconcile about Vanyel's sexual orientation.[29]

Harvest time
Healer Jisa becomes Council member by proxy in place of her mother, Herald-Healer Shavri.[30]
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Thirteen

Late Autumn
Vanyel Ashkevron leaves for three months to negotiate a treaty with Rethwellan
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Thirteen

Winter, before the Rethwellan mountain passes snow up
Vanyel Ashkevron returns from Rethwellan. The Heraldic Circle promotes Treven to full Herald two years early, due to the illness of King Randale.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Thirteen

The same night Vanyel returns
Herald-Mage Kilchas and his Companion Rohan die.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Fourteen

Weeks later
Karse has declared holy war on the "evil mages of Valdemar" but is too busy rooting out heresy at home to act on it.[31]

Herald-Mage Adept Lissandra and her Companion Shonsea die.[31]

Herald-Mage Adept Savil Ashkevron and her Companion Kellan are killed by a magical construct.[31]

Vanyel realizes he is the last Herald-Mage left.[31]

Herald-Mage Adept Vanyel Ashkevron is backed by ALL the Companions to go hunting for the mage who killed Kilchas, Lissandra, and Savil Ashkevron.[32]

Stefen determines to accompany Vanyel. His job blocking Randale's pain can be taken over by the Healers who are now able to do it.[32]
Note: "There're a dozen Healers that can pain-block now."

Hypothesis: ♘ Perhaps this is where and when Healers learned to pain-block for their patients.

Vanyel Ashkevron and Stefen head north in search of the mage who killed three Herald-Mages and attacked Vanyel.[32]

A Week Later
In the lawless territory north of Valdemar, multiple groups of bandits hired by "Master Dark" go out every day hunting for a Herald.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Seventeen

Two Weeks Later
Vanyel and Stefen reach Valdemar's last Guardpost at the edge of unclaimed territory, having plowed through continual snowstorms, camping at the side of the road. The snowstorms didn't have the earmarks of wizard weather, but when the Guardpost Captain remarks on the unusual snowfall, Vanyel realizes that the storms were created and sent from the north.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Seventeen

The Next Day
Vanyel and Stefen are ambushed by dozens of bandits. Stefen's horse bucks him off and he flees the melee on foot. The bandits use a bespelled powder provided by Master Dark to block Vanyel's powers. Four bandits die before he is subdued and taken back to Lord Rendan's bandit lair. Stefen's retreat ends when he drops from exhaustion. He is overwhelmed by guilt for abandoning Vanyel and heads back.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Seventeen

Late Afternoon
Stefen reaches the ambush site and finds Yfandes' motionless, tail-less body. There is no sign of Vanyel amongst the carnage. Stefen collapses with grief.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Seventeen

At the bandit lair, Vanyel is brutally beaten and then horrifically assaulted by the bandits. After they are through, Rendan realizes that Vanyel is nearly dead, and sends for a healer to keep him alive for Master Dark.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Seventeen

Past Sunset
The Healer known as Old Man Brodie returns from healing a colt and finds a bandit waiting to fetch him.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Seventeen

Brodie is outraged at Vanyel's condition. In addition to the assault, he is bleeding internally in a dozen places. Rendan orders him to do whatever it takes, on penalty of death for failure.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Eighteen

Night Has Fallen
Stefen realizes that Vanyel may still be alive elsewhere. He notices that Yfandes' tail stump is bleeding, which means she is still alive. He searches her body for something magical that is holding her unconscious.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Eighteen

A Candlemark Later
Stefen finds a dart under Yfandes' mane, tingling with magic. When he removes it, she jumps to her feet.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Eighteen

Brodie discovers that Vanyel's Healing Magic is keeping him alive. Vanyel's vast storehouse of magic power is there for Brodie to use, but the spell blocking his Mage Gift is also blocking his Healing. Brodie sets to work to crack the spell, which will allow Vanyel to free himself entirely.[33]

Yfandes takes charge of Stefen and they set out to rescue Vanyel.[33]

Vanyel prowls around inside his own mind, enraged. He periodically tests the confining spell, and at last it cracks. He breaks out in a wild fury, looking for any target.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Eighteen

Near Dawn
Yfandes and Stefen find the bandits' lair. As they look it over, flames burst out of the building in an explosion of Magic power. They rush in, and find many bodies burning, but others still alive. Stefen stops Vanyel from torturing the survivors. Vanyel is struck with guilt from the massacre, which included the innocent Healer. Yfandes and Stefen surround him with love, but know that the torment has broken him.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Eighteen

They leave but don't know where to go. They are approached by a kyree, Aroon, who was attracted by the magic. He offers them shelter with the Hot Springs Clan.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Eighteen

Sunset
They enter the kyrees' cave complex in the foothills of the mountains where Vanyel had been heading. The kyree shaman Hyrryl cannot mindheal Vanyel but encourages Stefen to just give Vanyel his love.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Eighteen

Time Passes
Vanyel's emotional recovery takes time, but it is necessary so that he will not be weak against Master Dark.[33]

When he is ready to face the world again, he explains what he learned from probing Rendan's mind. "Master Dark" has been operating a long time, since before Elspeth the Peacemaker was born. He wants Valdemar. For years he has been killing Herald-Mages and trainees from a distance, including children first manifesting their Mage Gift.[34][8]

(more events happen above and below this bit)

When Yfandes carries Stefen back to the Guard post for reinforcements, she explains the rough ride: ":I'm doing a kind of fetching, Bard, but I'm doing it with us.:"[34]

Herald-Mage Adept Vanyel Ashkevron and his Companion Yfandes die, using their Final Strike to prevent Leareth and his army from invading Valdemar.[34]

After their deaths, Vanyel and Yfandes do not choose to go to The Havens or to be reincarnated. Instead they become part of the Forest of Wendwinter (later called the Forest of Sorrows) so they can continue to protect Valdemar. Any hostile forces that enter the forest are killed.[34]

813 AF

(Some of the climactic events listed at the end of 812 AF above probably occurred in 813 AF, but there is no notice of the year.)
The Forest of Wendwinter becomes known as the Forest of Sorrows.[34]

Bard Stefen records Vanyel's last battle and death for the Chronicles, at the request of Herald-Chronicler Kyndri.[35]
Hypothesis: ☼ Assumes the Chronicles are updated right away. Actual timing is not specified.

Autumn
Herald-King Randale and his lifebonded, King's Own Herald-Healer Shavri, die.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Nineteen

♘ Randale and Shavri were both 34 years old.[2]
Note: Ten years ago in in 803 AF, they were young, "not even twenty-five."[6]

Herald-Heir Treven is crowned King of Valdemar.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Nineteen

Jisa is Chosen by Taver and becomes King's Own.
Hypothesis: ☼ Presumably this occurred, because Vanyel and Savil knew this would happen upon Shavri's death.[20]

Bard Stefen intends to commit suicide in the Forest of Sorrows, but is stopped by the spirit of Vanyel Ashkevron. He is given a task to perform before he can join Vanyel as a spirit in the Forest of Sorrows: to convince Valdemar that Gifted Heralds can serve and protect them without Herald-Mages.
Date source: Magic's Price: Chapter Nineteen
