Please note: This timeline is based on information originally compiled by MerlynPrime and augmented by pokemama1. Many of the dates are assigned or estimated because there is no date in the books: such dates are footnoted as "Hypothetical date."[1] Other dates may be based on such hypothetical dates, and are marked as such.[2] You can find him on Facebook, or on Twitter (@JoshuaWMurcray).
Actual timeline/date indicators, possibly by season, weather indicators, or offset information (two years after X), are headings in the calendar. The source of the Date indicator is cited below. Notes may provide additional information about the event or date, sometimes with relevant quotes. If there is no date information for an event that occurs sequentially in the books, it is only footnoted.
This article plugs into the Timeline. The letters "AF" mean After the Founding of Valdemar.
The Reign of Selenay is considered to be 'present day' Valdemar. Because there are so many events, the Reign of Selenay has been divided into three pages:
- Reign of Selenay (1376 -1385, up to Talia's arrival)
- Reign of Selenay (1386 - 1395), (Talia's arrival to Ancar's second defeat by Valdemar in 1395 AF)
- Reign of Selenay (1396 - ) (this page: Solaris and onward)
There are a LOT OF GAPS in this page that have not been researched and entered yet. Contributions are welcome.

1404 AF
- TIMELINE BASIS: The Winds of Fate Prologue states the book begins seven years after the last battle with Ancar. That battle could be anytime up to 1397 AF.
- In Winds of Change Chapter One, Elspeth is said to be 26. By her calculated birthdate in 1378 AF (two years after Selenay was crowned in 1376 AF), it is 1404 AF. This is the date used by this timeline.
Valdemar's ancient enemy, Karse, is beset with internal troubles.[12]
Summer Time
Elspeth kills an assassin under a magic spell of invisibility.[13] Meeting with her mother, Queen Selenay, she proposes that she leave to recruit mages for Valdemar, but Selenay refuses.[14]
A magical attack by insects inside Valdemar's border indicates that Valdemar's protection against magic is weakening[15]
- The insects were sent by Adept mage Hulda.

Dawnfire is seventeen years old.
Note: "She's only seventeen"
Date source: Winds of Fate, Chapter Six
To prepare for her expedition, Elspeth researches magic in the Chronicle archives. Kerowyn gives the sentient sword Need to Elspeth[16]

Note: "the Priest-King suddenly seems to be a Queen now."
Note: Elspeth doesn't get word of this until the end of fall, at the Vale. Winds of Change, Chapter Eleven
Note: "Sun in Glory" story moved this earlier due to Talia's investiture at Summer Solstice.
Solaris' generals are unable to win against Ancar's army, which doesn't seem human. Solaris prays, and Vkandis directs her to seek peace with Valdemar.
Event information: Storm Warning, Chapter 5
Hypothesis: Perhaps "her" Generals were previously under Lastern and fighting Karse while she was still gathering political support.
(presumably after Elspeth left, since she didn't know about it until late fall)
Alberich receives covert messages from Karse indicating they want talks with Valdemar. He, Eldan and Kerowyn determine the stories are genuine.[18][19]

Karse Ambassadors Sunpriest Ulrich and novice Karal meet their escort, Herald Rubrik, at the Valdemar border.[21]

Karal meets Talia.[22]
