Lord Thelkenpothonar was the father of Sinmonkelrath of Rethwellan. When Sinmon was killed in the "hunting accident" along with Prince Karathanelan, his father was enraged. He had lost his eldest son and heir to a fever shortly before. Due to the nature of Sinmon's death, Lord Thelken was given no clear details, leaving him questioning and furious from his double loss. With both sons gone, he felt he no longer had an heir for his lands and title.
Lady Cera's father did his best to soothe Lord Thelken, but he didn't know what had really happened to Sinmonkelrath. He made some very shrewd--and accurate--guesses based on what Cera didn't say in her letters, and what the Rethwellan King didn't tell Lord Thelken. It wasn't enough to appease Lord Thelken, who journeyed to Sandbriar at the height of the late summer heat in order to confront her directly. She gave him the unvarnished truth, then sent him on his way.
Lord Thelken spent the long journey home thinking over everything Lady Cera had told him, as well as the example she showed him of a woman competently running an estate. When he reached his home, he wrote to Cera asking if she would foster one of his daughters, whom he hoped to name as his heir.
Merchant Hurlbert once described Lord Thelken as "all starched collars and black clothing and a stick far up his...attitude."[1]
