Tremane was a Master-level mage and the Grand Duke of Lynnai in the Eastern Empire. He was one of the two final contenders to succeed Emperor Charliss to the throne, and Charliss' favored candidate. As a final test to prove his worthiness, Charliss charged him with the conquest of neighboring Hardorn, which was in disarray following the assassination of the mad king Ancar.
Unfortunately for Tremane and Charliss' plans, the first modern-day Mage Storms struck on the heels of Tremane's army crossing the border. As the Storms worsened, Tremane gave up any hopes for the Imperial throne, and settled instead for keeping his men alive. He used a forged Imperial seal to empty a supply depot before the Storms disrupted all Gating.
He consolidated his position around Shonar Manor, which he had taken for his headquarters. He built a more permanent encampment for his army, and encircled the whole on tall, thick walls. After coming to an understanding with the local town mayor, he extended his protection to the town of Shonar and eventually the surrounding countryside.
As he slowly restored peace and order, the people of Hardorn grew to accept him, and offered him the crown, on condition that he bind himself to the land, like the kings of old. He agreed. An old priest who knew how, awakened Tremane's Earthsense and performed the earth-binding ritual. Once recovered, he was crowned king of Hardorn.
Tremane was known for his military prowess and organization, as well as his ability to inspire loyalty. He overcame huge trials in Hardorn, not only keeping his men alive, but befriending the locals and being eventually accepted as their king.
He was middle-aged at the time of the Mage Storms series, and is described as follows:
"His thinning hair was much shorter than was fashionable; his receding hairline gave him a look of perpetual befuddlement. His eyes were too small, set just a hair too far apart; his beard was sparse, and looked like an afterthought. His thin face ended in a lantern jaw; his wiry body gave no hint of his quality as a warrior."[1]
