Valdemar is volume three of The Founding of Valdemar series.

Publisher's Description[]

The refugees from the Empire have established a thriving city called Haven with the help of the Tayledras and their allies. But the Tayledras have begun a slow withdrawal to the dangerous lands known as the Pelagirs, leaving the humans of Haven to find their own way.

But even with Haven settled, the lands around Haven are not without danger. Most of the danger comes in the form of magicians: magicians taking advantage of the abundant magical energy in the lands the Tayledras have cleansed; magicians who have no compunction about allying themselves with dark powers and enslaving magical beasts and the Elementals themselves.

Kordas, his family, and his people will need all the help they can get. But when a prayer to every god he has ever heard of brings Kordas a very specific and unexpected form of help, the new kingdom of Valdemar is set on a path like nothing else the world has ever seen.

Synopsis (Warning! SPOILERS!)[]

Ten years have passed since the Duchy refugees came to k'Vesla Vale and founded their new city. Many buildings are still under construction. Kordas Valdemar's son Restil is now grown, and employs all of the knowledge and strategy that Kordas has taught him over the tears.

The Tayledras departed long since, and are trying to keep a low profile and out of future history books. They don't want people to come looking for them and interfering with their mission to cleanse the land.

However, Silvermoon brings a problem to Kordas. Two cursed teens are reluctantly life-bonded, and the Tayledras mages have failed to find a solution. He hopes that the Valdemarans can help with their different type of magic, and possibly help with the teens themselves, since they were not Tayledras and were disrupting the clan. The teens are Lythe Shadowdancer and Rothas Sunsinger.[1]

Kordas has been the leader of the new nation in every way, and is finally persuaded to be crowned King. The coronation celebration includes fireworks, but the next day the mages tell Kordas that several of the displays were not theirs.

Soon after, a magically "lit" Grove is noticed near the Palace. Meanwhile, Kordas is troubled about the future of Valdemar, worried that future leaders might be corrupt. He goes to the Grove and talks aloud about the problem, marching around the area as if casting a spell, while beseeching the Gods for help. He is stunned when three intelligent "horses" appear and use Mindspeech to inform Kordas, Restil and Beltran that they have been Chosen.

Companion Ardatha has to go to great lengths to assure Kordas that they are there to help. Meanwhile, more Companions appear from the Grove and Choose humans.

A mage has control of the town of Restin north of Haven. A disaffected Valdemaran noble and his household went there, and provided information about Haven.
