A Tayledras Vale, centered on the Heartstone by Larry Dixon
Vales are magically protected tropical areas created by the Tayledras to keep themselves safe and comfortable while they work to heal the land from the effects of the Cataclysm.[1]
Vales are shielded with multi-layered Veil spells. These drive hostile people and dangerous creatures away, and help the Vales remain unnoticed from from magical and mundane senses. They also control the weather inside the vale, acting like a greenhouse, to help the Tayledras maintain the lush, semi-tropical climate they prefer, even in the dead of winter.
The vales are carefully landscaped to create as many private nooks and hot spring-fed bathing pools as possible. Paths twist and turn to maintain a sense of privacy and solitude, even in a populous vale.
Most Tayledras live inside their Clan's vale, with only some of the scouts choosing to live in the surrounding wilderness. They build ekeles in the trees, living high above the ground with their bondbirds. The vales are also home to clans of hertasi, who live in caves and tunnels. Hertasi inside the vale may choose to perform service and cleaning functions, although they are not servants per se. Other groups of sentient beings, such as dyheli and tervardi, usually live close to Tayledras vales, coming and going through the Veil spells as they please.
The heart of any vale is the Heartstone, a carefully managed magical Node which anchors and powers the Veil spells. The area around the Heartstone is where larger gatherings take place.
