Miniseries overview[]
When the miniseries begins, Lelia is a Bard-trainee looking for a song idea. Herald Wil's sister, also a Herald, died ten years ago, and Lelia wants to write about it. As the miniseries continues, Wil must raise a daughter while tracking down villains in a complex plot against Valdemar.

Chronology (Warning! SPOILERS!)[]
The stories are published in chronological order. They sometimes mention significant events which are on the Reign of Selenay timeline. The author's dates are admirably consistent with given values of the overall series Timeline. Since then, work on the Timeline has resulted in new interpretations of the dates of the Hardorn War and Elspeth's return, so there is some slippage.
- 1368 AF Wil is Chosen. A few days later, his sister, Herald Daryann, is mortally wounded. She lies comatose for a month, then wakes long enough to make her final report before dying. (Ten years before Lelia and Lyle's senior year.)[1]
- 1376 AF, Summer. King Sendar dies, Queen Selenay is crowned.
- 1378 AF, Spring Prince Karathanelan dies.
- Twins Lelia and Lyle are each in their senior year at the Collegium. Lelia wants to write a song about Daryann, and pesters Wil. Lyle leaves on his internship with Wil. Lelia graduates soon after.[1]
- Winter During Lelia's first journeyman trek, Innkeeper Olli asks for news of the Queen (Selenay) and of a hunting accident: the official story about Prince Karathanelan's death.[2]
- 1383 AF Lelia provides cover for Wil as he investigates at a noblewoman's party. (Talamir is still Queen's Own. It has been five years since the twins graduated.[3])
- 1385 AF Before Sovvan Lelia is diagnosed with an incurable wasting disease, Ostrum's Sickness.[4]
- Sovvan Lelia meets Healer Grier Baireschild.[4]
- 1386 AF Lelia is living at Court with Grier. She uses her Bardic Gift to call people out of a burning tavern.[4]
- Six weeks before Midsummer Talamir dies. Rolan goes on Search for a new Queen's Own.
- Two weeks before Midsummer Grier is recalled to his estate.[4]
- Two weeks after Midsummer Rolan brings Talia to be the new Queen's Own Herald.
- Lelia gets a new job.[4]
- 1393 AF Talia goes to Hardorn. Her Gift is temporarily blocked by Goatsfoot. Terrible things happen. Valdemar fights off Ancar's demons.[5]
- The Zevynites flee Ancar, and Queen Selenay grants them land. Herald Elene and Companion Alrek visit Hjoldhald to tell them about Valdemar's laws, and about Companions Choosing youths to be Heralds.[6]
- Later, in Haven, Botanist Yelyza is asked to investigate poisons like Goatsfoot that affect Gifts. She has a substance abuse problem, and is assigned a Mindhealer: Androa Baireschild.[7]
- Date undefined: between 1393 and 1395 AF Herald Elene dies. Will has to inform her mother, and Lelia comes along. Lelia sings Wil to sleep for the first time. They finally become lovers.[8]
- 1394 AF When Valdemar asks for soldiers to fight Ancar, the Zevynites send men. While they are away, Reeve foresees a bandit attack on Hjoldhald, so the village is ready. Later, Reeve's mother dies.[6]
- 1395 AF War with Hardorn. Support from Rethwellan, including Kerowyn and her Skybolts, wins victory for Valdemar.[9]
- 1399 AF Wil's Foresight increasingly disrupts his sleep (by 1404 AF, "Lelia's Bardic Gift hadn't been able to lull him to sleep for over half a decade."[10])
- At the border after conflict with Hardorn, Healer Androa Baireschild examines an exhausted Lelia, who reveals her pregnancy. (Source[11])
- 1400 AF Ivy is born. (3 years old in "The Whitest Lie")
- 1401 AF Wil is assigned to Haven, allowing him time with terminally ill Lelia and their infant daughter. ("off Circuit duty ... two years." Source[12])
- 1402 AF Botanist Yelyza disappears (three years before 1405 AF.[7])
- 1403 AF Bard Amelie arrives in Highjorune, sent undercover by Lelia to investigate treasonous Bards. (counted back from meeting Wil, "she came to Highjorune eight months ago."[13])
- A few weeks before Sovvan Lelia passes away from Ostrum's Sickness. (Source[13])
- Ivy is 3 years old. ("Few places one could take a three-year-old.") Wil recalls Hardorn events of 1393 AF, the war with Hardorn (1395 AF), and the "inevitable war to come." Lyle mentions there's been three years of war. Wil finds the key to Lelia's coded records. Bereaved Companion Aubryn volunteers to travel with Wil and watch Ivy.[12]
- 1404 AF Wil begins to get familiar with the code (counted back from "He'd memorized it in the last three months."[13])
- A month later, the last snowfall melts in Highjorune (counted back from "the last of the snowfall had melted two months ago.") Amelie becomes desperate for rescue ("She'd spent two of those months waiting for a Herald to rescue her."[13])
- A month later, Wil and Ivy go undercover in Highjorune to investigate the conspiracy (counted back from "had started working at the Crown a month ago"[13])
- A month later, Bree makes contact with Wil, providing evidence of murder. Wil makes arrests.[13] Ivy is four years old. ("yet to turn five years old."[13]) ("She's four!"[11])
- While waiting for the weather to clear, Wil's prisoner is murdered. He arrests the killer's helper and they leave immediately.[11]
- Princess Elspeth is nearly assassinated.[14]
- The turmoil after the assassination attempt causes issues with Wil transporting his prisoner, Carris. The other conspirators send assassins after Wil.[15]
- Two and a half weeks later, Wil foils an ambush by the assassins at a Waystation.[15]
- Three weeks after departing Highjorune, Wil, Ivy and Carris arrive at Langfirch's house. The assassins attack. Carris gives Wil the location of the weapons cache.[15]
- Dates unknown. Wil hands off his prisoner and departs.
- A month after leaving Langfirch, Wil and Ivy are at the Baireschild estate. Wil has been chasing Lord Dark for "two seasons." Khaari, Lyle and his kin show up and they lay siege to the quarry where Madra and her gang are protecting the cache.[10]
- A week into the siege, Madra cracks. Lord Dark eats her gang, and flies her away, only pausing as she throws powder into Wil's face.[10]
- A few days later. Lord Healer Grier Baireschild has saved Wil's life. Wil awakens, and finds he has lost his Mindmagic. He cannot even speak to Vehs.[10]
- Before Sovvan Madra sends a threat. Lyle and Khaari go to the Quarry to destroy Madra's cache of deadly weapons.[16]
- A magical construct begins nightly attacks on Wil unobserved, almost killing him. Grier treats him daily, but his condition worsens each night as the construct secretly returns.[16]
- A few days before Sovvan Ivy discovers the construct. Grier uses the Maralud costume to scare it, and Khaari traps it.[16]
- Khaari plans to follow the construct back to Madra. ("I will not rest this winter."[16])
- Midwinter Eve. Wil still looks terrible, but he is eating heartily and smiling.[16]
- 1405 AF Spring In Haven, Talia tells Wil that Botanist Yelyza was investigating poisons that affect Gifts. Yelyza vanished three years ago. They finally find her notes. The uncommon ingredient, Cauldroncap, is from a specific region of the Pelagirs.[7]
- Herald-Mage Princess Elspeth shows up in Forst Reach. Magic has returned to Valdemar.[17]
- Khaari awakes outside her body in the High Hills.[18]
- Wil and Amelie depart Haven for the Pelagirs. They detour to Hjoldhald, home of the Zevynites.They were visited by Herald Elene and Companion Alrek long ago.[6]
- Khaari departs the High Hills and arrives in Briar's Rock, where a bear is terrorizing a village. Wil's party arrives a few days later.[19]
